Have you ever been told to “go with the flow?” I have, and it is usually when I am not doing that. Or how about “Go along to get along.” For my Spanish-speaking blog readers, I have no idea how these English phrases translate into your romantic language. I imagine there is a similar set of sayings that imply that there is a direction people are going, and you should blend in so that you adapt to the prevailing mindset. Well, doing that has never been a skill I possessed. Some of you are very good about adapting to values and the culture of your environment, and there is a lot to be said for that skill. But today, I am going to talk about the Holy Flow, and getting along with the Holy Spirit.
One of the greatest insights I have had recently is that the Holy Spirit is a “person.” Some of you may be shocked to read this, because you have been to seminary, or paid more attention that I have to great Bible teachers, or maybe you discerned this from the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. You probably knew this already. But I didn’t!
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A PERSON
The Holy Spirit is more real than some of us can imagine, is more of a person that some of us can believe, and a better friend than some of us realize. The Holy Spirit’s sacred personhood can be traced back to the New Testament when Jesus said in John 14:16-17, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” Jesus wasn’t talking about an impersonal force or energy; He was introducing us to a person who would play an essential role in our lives.
GETTING TO KNOW THE HOLY SPIRIT
We often associate the Holy Spirit with power, as depicted in Acts 1:8: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” It’s true that the Holy Spirit brings power, but the real essence of this power stems from His personhood, His character, His love, and His purpose.
LEARNING TO FLOW WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
This brings us to the concept of the Holy Flow. We are not merely going along to get along with a societal norm or trend. Rather, we are learning to move in sync with the Holy Spirit, guided by His wisdom and instruction. Galatians 5:25 says, “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” We need strong, Biblically-based leaders that will follow Christ, and Christ alone. Amen?
This means being attentive to His voice and aligning our actions with His guidance. It’s about developing a relationship that lets us fully experience the Holy Spirit’s transformative power. The apostle Paul illustrates this in Romans 8:14, “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.”
Embracing the Holy Flow isn’t about giving up our individuality, but rather recognizing that the Holy Spirit wants to work through our unique qualities to glorify God. As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 12:7, “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS OUR FRIEND
Just as a friend cares for us, offers guidance, and stands by us in all circumstances, the Holy Spirit does the same. In John 14:26, Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as our Helper: “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
This is no mere acquaintance. The Holy Spirit is a companion who knows us intimately, counsels us wisely, and always seeks the best for us.
BEND TO THE HOLY SPIRIT, AND NOT TO THE CROWD
Remember, embracing the Holy Flow isn’t about blending in with the crowd or compromising our beliefs. It’s about aligning ourselves with the Holy Spirit, becoming more like Jesus, and serving as His witnesses. It’s about living out the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control that come from the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). As we grow in our relationship with the Holy Spirit, we will experience the true joy and purpose that God has intended for us. Let’s go with the Holy Flow!
DIALOGUE WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
If you like, you can stop reading at this point. I am about to get selfish. This is my time with the Holy Spirit, as I sit daily in prayer and meditation. I do this for me, not for you. Not for what you may think of me. While I do hope, by these postings, to inspire you to have your own daily Conversations with Christ, this time belongs to my special time with God. So, for the rest of this post, I am going to engage in a very private, personal conversation with the Person: God, in the Personhood of the Holy Spirit. Read on if you like, but this is now my time with Him.
Dear God, Holy Spirit, my great comforter, thank you for showing me that you are just as much of a person as Jesus Christ. Sometimes I pray to God the Father, and get the parenting I never had growing up, and sometimes I pray to Jesus Christ, who saved, redeemed, and reconciled me to God the Father. But today, it is you who are in my mind and heart. You are so very real this morning, and I feel the Holy Flow of you inside of me. Please tell me whatever you like, lead me wherever you want me to go, and do with me as you please.
Child, you are blessed by God, and chosen by us to be like us. We are here. Three persons. One God. Totally holy and without fault. Perfect in every way. Enter our presence, and be with us, for we love you and have a plan for your life.
Lord God, why does the Bible not talk very directly and specifically about the “we” of you three? I feel very weird hearing “we”, for we are taught there is only one God. I know this is a divine mystery, but can you give me a little understanding? Sometimes, I converse with God the Father, sometimes with Jesus Christ, but when I speak to you, I don’t think of you as a person, but more of an energy or force.
But we are one. There is not separation, child. When you pray to one of us, you are praying to all of us, Father, Son, and me.
OK, I don’t understand and can’t wrap my head around this. But I am grateful to see that you are someone that I can talk to as well, just like I talk to my wife. By the way, thank you for Patty. She is a joy and such a precious person. I praise you for her. Please heal her shoulder, and inspire her to get to a doctor. I think she needs a steroid shot.
Child, I will do that, but I want you to talk to her about it as well. She needs to listen to you more, and to me, but she is in fear of doctors, and she does not like injections.
I know Lord. So, can I push her a little to get this taken care of today?
Yes, my child. Urge her to get a doctor’s appointment today.
OK, I will. Now, I have a meeting in 20 minutes and need a shower. Is there anything else we can chat about real quick?
Child, you and Patty are being mentored by Buddy and Letty, because I have inspired them to do this. Bless them financially by contributing to their ministry.
Yes, Lord. I will talk to Patty about that. This would be a blessing to us to do just that. Thank you for those words of wisdom. And thank you for blessing us so richly financially that we can bless others with your resources that you have “loaned” us.
You are welcome, my child. Now, go get your shower.
Blessings my friend. And, someday soon I hope, I will see you face to face, and you can fully explain this three-in-one, Father, Spirit, Son, Trinity relationship.
Child, I promise you that you will understand all things that we understand, when you are with us in Spirit-form like we are, in Heaven.
Lord God, I so look forward to that day. Take me home anytime you are ready. I want to go!!!
You have work to do on earth still. But in good time, you will come home.
Thank you Lord. Amen.
Your aspiring servant,
25 July 2023
